How the pathway operates
The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) provides a dedicated permanent residence route for qualified tradespeople across construction, mechanics, maintenance, industrial operations, chefs, and culinary specialists. It features more accessible language thresholds than FSWP, acknowledging the practical, hands-on expertise of certified trades professionals.
To be eligible, candidates must possess either a valid full-time Canadian job offer of at least 1 year OR a Canadian Certificate of Qualification issued by a provincial or territorial apprenticeship regulatory body. Candidates benefit both from standard Express Entry draws and from targeted federal category-based rounds for Trade Occupations.
Key Eligibility Requirements
- At least 2 years of full-time (or equal part-time, minimum 3,120 hours) work experience in a skilled trade within the 5 years before applying.

Practical Tips for Indian Applicants
- Indian ITI diplomas, state apprenticeship certificates, and polytechnic trade diplomas are respected, but to satisfy the 'Certificate of Qualification' path without a job offer, you must undergo a provincial trades assessment (e.g., through Skilled Trades Ontario or SkilledTradesBC) and write the exam in Canada.
- For chefs, cooks and bakers (NOC 62200 and 63200), documentation of commercial kitchen hours, brigade structure, and menu formulation is heavily verified by visa officers.
